Elijah E. Webb & Sarah McClanahan

Generation No. 3

  1. ELIJAH E.3 WEBB (JAMES2, JOHN1) was born 26 Jul 17811,2 in Rockingham Co., VA, and died 20 Sep 18492 in Bath Co., Kentucky. He married SARAH MCCLANAHAN 28 Jan 1809 in Bourbon Co., Kentucky (Bourbon Co. Marriage Register 1, pg 42) daughter of WILLIAM S. MCCLANAHAN & ELIZABETH and the grand-daughter of the Rev. War soldier THOMAS MCCLANAHAN & MARGARET STROTHER. Sarah was born 24 May 17933 Bourbon Co., KY, and died Jan 18593 in Bourbon Co., Kentucky. Elijah is buried in the Old Sharpsburg Cemetery2, Bath Co., KY: 07/26/1781-09/20/1849.

We first see Elijah Webb as a witness to a Bill of Sale4 by his father in Jessamine Co., KY in 1801.  Elijah then appears continuously on the 1804-1830 Bourbon Co., KY tax lists5.  Shortly before his marriage on 12 Sep 1808 Elijah Webb is a witness for his future father-in-law to the codicil of the will of Thomas McClanahan, Sr6.  In his will dated 4 May 1807 and proved Feb Court 18097 her father bequethed to his grand-daughter Sally McClanahan 50 acres.  On 1 Feb 18128 Elijah witnesses a deed from John Harrison and Elizabeth, his wife, of the County of Bourbon, Ky., to Thomas McClanahan of Bourbon Co., Ky. Consideration, $250.00. 50 acres on Cooper's Run, part of land they hold as a legacy from Thomas McClanahan, dec'd.  This land was bequeathed by Thomas McClanahan Sr. to his grand-daughter Elizabeth who had married John Harrison in 1803 which sell by this deed to Sally's brother Thomas.  On Mar 2, 18129 Elijah sells the 50 acres bequeathed to his wife Sally and on Oct 3, 181210 Sally Webb waives her dower rights to the land.  Sally's brother William McClanahan left a will dated 26 Mar 181311, proved June Court 1813 and was made just prior to “a tour in the army” and it appears William died during the War of 1812.  The Inventory of William McClanahan, deceased dated 29 Jun 1813 lists a debt to one E. Webb of $9.00.  A Feb 28, 1815 deed12 William Markum to Elijah Webb for 48 acres a “tract of land interferes with the claim of Thomas McClanahan deceased on Coopers Run now owned by the devises of McClanahan and it is the intention of said Markum to convery to each of the devises so holding the parts which they severally claim.”  In 1814 Elijah in named in a civil case Jacob Coyle vs Moses Webb13 by his brother seeking a deposition from Elijah. And in 1823 we learn the occupation of Elijah from the will of William Benear14 who directs his son Henry to be bound out to Elijah Webb to learn the art of a gunsmith.

In the Bourbon Co., Kentucky census Elijah is enumerated living in Stoner in 1810 and North Middletown in 1820.  In 1830 Elijah moved to Bath Co., Kentucky where he appears on the tax rolls15 from 1831 to 1847. Elijah appears on the 1830 and 1840 Bath Co., KY census living in Slate Creek.

Elijah's will dated 11 Jun 1847 and proved 8 Oct 1849, names his wife Sarah and children Bennajah A. Webb, Elizabeth M. Busby, Sarah Webb and Thos M Webb. (Bath County, KY, Will Book E, p. 126-127). It seems apparent from the census records that there were other children that died during childhood or at least before Elijah.

After Elijah's death Sally returned to Bourbon County and appears there on the 1850 census with her daughter Sallie. Sally died in 1850 leaving a will dated 6 Jul 1858 and proved 13 Jan 1859 and names her “two children” Thomas M. Webb & Elizabeth Busby (Bourbon Co., KY, Will Book Q, p. 79-81).  Her children Bennajah and Sarah apparently having died after their father's death but before her will is written.
