Joseph Webb & Mary

Generation No. 2

  1. JOSEPH WEBB, (JOHN1) was born 06 May 1735 in (O.S.) Oley Twp, Philadelphia (now Berks), Pensylvania1,2, and died Bet. 1775 - 1777 probably in Brunswick Twp, Berks, PA.  He married MARY UNKNOWN Abt. Feb 1758 in Berks Co., PA. She died Aft. 1790.

The first record we find of Joseph is Feb 10, 1755/563 as a witness, along with several of his siblings, to the wedding Samuel Hughes & Margaret Gethin at the Exeter Meeting House.  The presence of the Webbs as witnesses is probably due to the fact the Samuel Hughes, a widower, had first married Elizabeth Willets, the sister of Rachel Willets wife of John Webb, Jr.  On the 23 Feb 17584 the Exeter Monthly Meeting Minutes records a complaint against Joseph Webb for marrying outside before a justice and he was subsequently disowned.  He appears for the first time, this same year, on the Berks County tax lists5,6 of Exeter Township.  On the 3 May 17643 Joseph appears as a witnesses to marriage of his brother Samuel Webb & Rebecca Paine.  From 1771-1775 Joseph Webb appears in Brunswick Township on the Berks County Tax lists and then beginning in 1777 Mary Webb, his widow, appears.  In 1784 the estate of Joseph Webb is taxed on 392 acres in Brunswick Township.  On 20 Mar 17817 administration of Joseph's estate is granted to daughters Rachel and Martha, as his widow Mary declined.  The following day, 21 Mar 17817, John Lane and James Dickenson (perhps the future husband of daughter Rachel), produce the personal property inventory of the estate of Joseph Webb.  On April 21, 17827, Rachel Webb & Martha Webb of Brunswick Township, daughters of Joseph Webb deceased, sign an Adminstration bond with surety by Isaac Boone & Samuel Webb of Exeter Township.  This is significant in that Isaac Boone, s/o Joseph & Catharine Boone, is Joseph Webb's 1st cousin and Samuel Webb is Joseph's brother.  On Dec 2, 17827, George Hughes is appointed guardianship of Martha Webb and Mary Webb, both minors above the age of 14 and the daughters of Joseph Webb deceased.  William Hughes is appointed guardianship of Sarah Webb daughter of Joseph Webb deceased. George Hughes and William Hughes are appointed guardianhip of Mary Webb, widow of Joseph Webb deceased.  George Hughes, son of John Hughes and Hannah Boone, married Matha Boone, daughter of James Boone & Mary Foulke, and would make his wife Martha Boone a 1st cousin of Joseph Webb.  William Hughes married Amy Willets, sister of Rachel, who married Joseph's brother John Webb, Jr.

On Dec 20, 17867, Philip Shartz is appointed guardianship of Joseph Webb, a minor above the age of 14, and Peter Orbig [Orwig] is appointed guardianship of Dinah Webb, a minor above the age of 14, both children of Josesph Webb deceased.  [Note – a Philip Shatz died 1805, Berks County and on 7 Mar 1805 administration is granted to son Abraham and son-in-law Caspar THEIL].  Then on Dec 8, 17897 Philip Shartz is appointed guardianship of Obadiah Webb, a minor above the age of 14, son of Joseph Webb deceased.  What relationship Phillip Shartz and Peter Orwig have to the Webb family remains unknown.  However, is it possible that Peter Orwig's wife, Hannah, was a Webb and is related but there is no proof of her maiden name.  And we also know that Joseph's brother, Benjamin Webb, sold his land to Peter Orwig (see below). Most published sources show Peter Orwig's wife as Hannah Webb born 28 May 1756 in Stanford, CT which would seem to remove any possibilty of a family relationship to Joseph Webb. However, a survey of those who show Hannah's birth date and place of birth reveals that none can cite a source which makes the cited birth date and place very questionable.

On 11 Aug 1790, Joseph Webb, now over 21, petitions the Berks Co., Pennsylvania Orphan's Court, as the “eldest son of Joseph Webb deceased”, to partition 392 acres in Brunswick Township and names siblings: Rachel, wife of James Dickinson, Martha, Sarah, Dina, Mary, wife of John Abile, Obediah. Dina and Obediah still minors. (Berks Co., PA Orphan's Court Vol 4, p. 109)

From a deed by Joseph's brother Benjamin Webb dated 26 Sep 1778, we know that John Webb acquired several tracts of land in 1750, one of which, situated in Brunswick Township, was sold by John Webb to his son Benjamin (Berks Co., PA, DB B3, p. 401).  It seems likely that another of these tracts was acquired by John's son Joseph.  The exact dispostion of the 392 acres in Brunswick Township has still not been determined.

Children of Joseph and Mary WEBB are:

  1. Rachel3 WEBB, b. 1758-1763, Berks Co., PA; m. 1782-1790 James DICKENSON.

  1. Martha WEBB, b. 1761-1763, Berks Co., PA; m. May 3, 17918 St. Paul's Church, Amityville, Berks, PA, Henry TAMSON [possibly Thompson?]

  1. Sarah WEBB, b. Bet. 1761 - 1767, Berks Co., PA.

  1. Mary Magdalena WEBB, b. Bet. 1761 - 1767, Berks Co., PA; m. Johannes ABILE/ABEE/APPLE 27 Jun 1784 Exeter, Berks Co., PA by Rev. William Boos

  1. Joseph WEBB, b. 28 Feb 1768, Berks Co., PA.

  1. Dinah WEBB, b. 1768-1772, Berks Co., PA.

  1. Obadiah WEBB, b. 1769/70, Berks Co., PA.

Generation No. 3

  1. JOSEPH WEBB, (JOSEPH2, JOHN1) was born 28 Feb 1768 in Berks Co., PA. and died 30 Apr 1838, aged 70 years, 2 mos, 2 days, Wayne Twp, Butler Co., OH and is buried, along with his wife, in the Old Jacksonburg Cemetery in Wayne Township9.  He married Mary Magdalena UNKNOWN; d. Aft 1830 Butler Co., OH aged aged 66 yrs 11 mos9.

On Apr 25, 1795 Joseph Webb, blacksmith of Manheim Township, leased a lot in Orwigsburg in Brunswick township from Perter and Hannah Orwig which he then assigned to Jacob Miller on 20 Jan 1801 (Berks Co., PA DB 19, p. 226 & DB 19, p. 228).  Joseph appears in the 1800 Census in Brunswick Township and appears to be living with his mother although it is possible that he married and his wife is older than he.

On 13 Feb 1807, William Green of Reading, Berks Co., PA conveys two contiguous tracts of land containing four hundred Seventy six acres to Joseph Webb of Schuylkill Township and Aaron Boen Junior of Brunswick Township, Berks Co., PA (Schuylkill Co., PA, Deed Book 22, p. 21).  On 1 Jun 1810, Joseph Webb of Schuylkill Township, Berks Co., PA and Aaron Boen, Jr. of Brunswich Township, Berks Co., PA convey one tract of land deeded by Wm Green in 1807 to Jacob Stahl, Sr. of Schuylkill Township, Berks Co., PA (Schuylkill Co., PA, Deed Book 16, p. 526).  Then on 25 Aug 1810, Joseph Webb & Aaron Boen Jr. convey the other tract deeded in 1807 by Wm Green to John Richards, Peter Richards, Frederick Gassenhaimer, Frederick Beitenman, John Stonecker, & Peter Bastrip (Schuylkill Co., PA Deed Book 22, p. 23).  In 1810 no Joseph Webb is listed in the Berks County census although we do find two Aaron Boen's. Joseph Webb is likely already in Butler Co., Ohio along with his brother Obediah, however, he does not appear on the 1810 Butler Co., OH tax list; however, the tax list is only current landholders.  It isn't until Nov 8, 1810 that Joseph bought 160 acres of land in Wayne Twp, Buter Co., OH from John Debolt (Butler Co., OH DB B-335).

On 11 May 1815 a Joseph Webb of Manheim Township in Schuykill Co., PA and Catherine Webb daughter of Christian and Catherine Walter of Manheim Township execute a deed, acknowledging receipt of their share of a legacy, to Leonard Faust executor of Anthony Faust of Bern Township whose will dated 6 Jan 1790 [Berks Co., PA Deed Book 29, p. 124].  However, this can not be Joseph Webb, son of Joseph and Mary as there is listed in the 1820 census a Joseph Webb in Manheim Twp which is now part of Schuykill County who is too young to be their son.

In the 1820 Butler Co., OH census we find Joseph Webb enumerated in Wayne Township and living beside him is Obadiah Webb.  On Oct 3, 1822 Joseph Webb and wife Magdalena of Butler Co., OH sold 30 acres in Preble Co., OH to Joseph Adams of Preble County (Preble Co., OH, DB 6, p. 205).  Then on Oct 1, 1823 Joseph and Magdalena Webb of Wayne Twp, Butler Co, sold 90 acres in south part of SW 1/4 of Section 23, T 4 R 3 to son-in-law John Overpeck of Gratis Twp, Preble Co., OH, and witnessed by Isaac Allen and Jonas Jones(Preble Co., OH DB 7, p. 361).  How Joseph Webb acquired the two parcels in Preble Co., OH has not yet been determined.  On Aug 17, 1836 Joseph sold the land in Wayne Township, originally purchased from John Debolt, to Obadiah D. Webb (Butler Co., OH, DB 3, p. 19).

Children of Joseph WEBB and Magdalena:

  1. Elizabeth WEBB, b. Abt 1802 Berks Co., PA; d. bef 1860 Preble Co., OH; m. 31 Jan 1822 in Butler Co., OH John OVERPECK who is possibly the son of Jacob OVERPECK who appears in Wayne Twp in the 1820 census.

  1. Obadiah D.4 WEBB, b. 20 Aug 1803, Berks Co., PA.

  1. DINAH WEBB, (JOSEPH2, JOHN1) was born 1768-1772 in Berks Co., PA and died Bef. 1828.  She apparently was also know as Justina as evidenced by the baptism record of don David.  She married DANIEL WEIDNER 10 Aug 17908 in the Schwartzwald Church by Rev. William Boos, Amity Twp, Berks Co., PA.  He was born 03 Jun 1765 and died 17 Nov 182810 Bethel Twp, Berks Co., PA, the son of David WEIDNER and Hannah WOMELSDORF who were married 15 Nov 1764 Lutheran Church, New Hanover, Berks Co., PA.

In 1790 Daniel & Dinah Weidner are living next to her mother Mary Webb in Amity where they remained through 1800 after which they removed to Heidelberg Twp where Hannah's brother John WOMELSDORF had started the town of Womelsdorf in 176211.

In a Berks Co., PA Orphans Court record dated Aug 17, 1829 Joseph Weidner, eldest son of Daniel Weidner deceased of Bethel Twp, petitions the court to partition his father's land in Bethel Twp containing 69 acres and informs us that Daniel died leaving no widow and children: David, Peter, Daniel, and Michael. Both Joseph and David declined the land as valued by the court and their brother Peter accepted.

Child of Dinah WEBB and Daniel WEIDNER is:

  1. Joseph WEIDNER, b. 1792

  1. David Weidner, b. 21 Feb 1794, bp. St. Paul's Church, Amityville, PA; d. 1831

  1. Peter Weidner, b. 29 Aug 1799, d. 12 Dec 1875

  1. William Weidner, b. 03 Nov 1801; d. 1828

  1. Daniel Weidner, b. 14 Dec 1804; d. 1890

  1. Michael Weidner, b. aft 1807

  1. OBADIAH WEBB, (JOSEPH2, JOHN1) was born Abt 1770, Berks Co., PA; died 26 Apr 1849 at age 79 in Noble Township, Defiance Co., OH and is buried in the Noble-Tiffin Cemetery (Old Webb Cemetery).  He married (1) Bef. 1800, Catherine FEIG/FEAG/FEY, daughter of Abraham FEY and Appolonia KANTNER of Brunswick Township, grand-daughter of Jacob KANTNER and Susan HUBLER of Tulpehocken Twp, Berks Co., PA.  Also the grandchild of Nicholas and Marie Salome FEY of Brunswick Township.  Catharine died bef. 1820 in Butler Co., OH.  He married (2) Mary WEBBER on 20 Mar 182212 in Butler Co., OH and she probably died in Williams Co., OH between 1830 and 1840.

Obadiah Webb's wife is identified by a Berks Co., Pennsylvania deed dated 5 Apr 1800 related to the settlement of the estate of Jacob Kantner, who died intestate in 1791: “Philip Huller and Susannah his wife Godrey Kaucher and Christina his wife, Obediah Webb and Catherine his wife and Nicholas Feig all of the County of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, they the said Susannah, Christina, Catherine and Nicholas Fieg being four of the grand children of Jacob Kantner late of Tulpehocon Township in the County of Berks aforesaid yeoman deceased.” [Berks Co., PA DB 19, p. 64].  Anther receipt and executor release also idendifies Jacob Feig as another grandchild of Jacob Kantner and sibling of Cathaine [Berks Co., PA DB 19, p. 65] and Mary Salome wife of Christian Webber, Jr. of Pinegrove Township is also identified as the grandchild of Jacob Kantor [Berks Co., PA DB 19, p. 66]. From the Berks Co., PA estate file of Jacob Kantner, died 1773, we find an Orphans Court petition dated May 3, 1797 stating: "The petition of Christian Webber in Right of his wife Mary Salome one of the daughters of Appaloma Fey dec'd which Appaloma is one of the daughters of Jacob Kantner late of Tulpehoccens Township Husbandman dec'd".  And from the baptism record of Maria Salome we find her father's name was Abraham, and therefore, also the father of Catharine, wife of Obadiah Webb.   Nicholas Fey first appears in the 1769 Brunswich Twp tax lists and Abraham first appears in 1773.

Obadiah apparently moved from Manhiem Township, Berks Co., PA after 1800 as he appears there in the 1800 census.  On Dec 16, 1805 one Joseph Brown, acting for Obadiah Webb, purchased 42 acres in Madison Township, Butler Co., Ohio from Henry Debolt who died shortly thereafter on 27 Dec 1805 without having given a deed for the land to Obadiah. Pursuant to a court order, George Debolt, son of Henry Debolt, finally deed the land to Obadiah on July 27, 1816 (Butler Co., OH, DB G-192). Obadiah appears on the1810 Butler Co., OH Tax List13, and also from 1816 to 1824.  On Jul 31, 1824 Obadiah sold the same 42 acres to Benjamin L. Woodruff ( Butler Co., OH DB L-2) and moved, before 1827, to land in what was then Defiance Township,Williams Co., OH and in 1845 became Noble Township, Defiance Co., OH. Perhaps coincidently, John Haller received a patent in 1833 for land in Williams Co., OH.  John Haller, probably related by marriage to Obadiah Webb, was the son of Henry Haller of Berks Co., PA, and the brother of Sarah Haller, wife of Samuel Webb of Berks Co., PA and Orange Co., IN.
