ROBERT MATTHEWS was born 1705 in Oyster Bay, New York, and died Bet. May 12 - Jun 06, 1748 in Exeter Twp, Philadelphia County (now Berks), Pensylvania. He married MARY COLES Jul 22, 17311 in St. George's Church, Hempstead, Queens, Long Island, NY. She was born Feb 2, 1713 (James Webb Bible2) probably Oyster Bay, Queens Co., Long Island, New York, and died Aug 5, 17922 probably in Berks Co., Pennsylvania or Rockingham Co., Virginia. After the death of ROBERT MATTHEWS in 1748, she married CLEMENT CHERRINGTON Apr 10, 1750 in Berks Co., Pennsylvania3,4. He was born 1711 in Cheltenham, England4, and died 1769 in Pennsylvania4.
To this author's knowledge, the ancestry of Robert Matthews or Mary Coles is not proved, although there is evidence suggusting both were from the Oyster Bay area of Long Island and their marriage is recorded in nearby Hempstead, Long Island. Of Mary Coles, Dean Cherrington, researcher and co-author of THE CHERRINGTON FAMILY HISTORY & GENEALOGY3, writes4:
“I have undocumented information that she was born on Long Island, NY on February 3, 1713. I found this info in a book published on the Weed & Allied Families by Charles A. Weed in 1971. I also found some penciled notes referring to her being born on Long Island, NY, among the personal papers of Ernest Herst Cherrington, the well known author and lecturer on Probition causes during the early 1900's, which are archived at the Ohio Historical Society Library on the campus of Ohio State Univ. in Columbus, OH. No source reference is given by either author.”
Mary's birth date of Feb 2, 1713 recorded in the James Webb Bible affirms the Cherrington research. Mary Coles is probably the sister or cousin of Solomon Coles and Daniel Coles brothers who arrived in Berks County at about the same time as Robert & Mary Matthews. By 1740 Robert and Mary are living of the banks of the Schuylkill River5 in what becomes Exeter Township in 1741 on land bordering Squire Boone and situated about 3-4 miles from the Exeter Friends meeting house. We find Robert Matthews' land grant, an abstract of his will, and the second marriage of Mary Coles to Clement Cherrington recorded in the following deed from Clement Cherring to Thomas Kirby in 1754:
“CLEMENT CHERRINGTON of the Township of Exeter (formerly in Philadelphia County , but now ) in the new County of Berks in the Province of Pennsylvania Currier and Mary his wife, late Mary Mathews Widow of Robert Mathews late of Exeter in the County of Philadelphia deceased, and Michael Warin late of the same Township, but now of Augusta County in Virginia, yeoman (which Mary and Michael are Executrix and Executor of the Testament and last will of the said Robert Mathews) of the one part; --------- AND ------------- THOMAS KIRBY formerly of Exeter aforesaid but now of Maiden Creek in the said County of Berks Yeoman of the other part. Whereas the Honorable John Penn, Thomas Penn and Richard Penn Esqs. Proprietaries and Governors in Chief of the Province of Pennsylvania by their Patent or Grant dated the sixteenth of May 1740 did grant and confirm unto the aforesaid Robert Mathews a Tract of land situate on Schuylkill River near Amity Township (then) in the County of Philadelphia ...” “And Whereas the said Mary Mathews intermarried with the aforesaid Clement Cherrington on or about the tenth Day of April in the Year 1750 not one of the children named in the last will above recited being then arrived at the Age of Twenty one years.” (Berks Co., Pennsylvania; WPA Transcribed Copy Deed Book Vol. 574; pg 283)
Robert Matthews died leaving a will dated 12 May 1748, proved 6 June 1748, in which he names his wife Mary and children John, Townsends, Amelia, Robert, Rebecca, Mary & Solomon. He names as executors his wife Mary Matthews and Michael Warren (Philadelphia Co., PA Will Book G, p. 281). The settlement of the estate becomes the source of a good deal of information on their children as found in the Matthews v. Warren6,7 civil case filed in 1803 in Augusta County, Virginia by the heirs of Robert Matthews. The deed above from Cherrington to Kirby was done to satisfy the terms of Robert Matthews' will which required the estate be sold and distributed among his children should his widow marry again. Robert Matthews' son John, must have turned 21 years old in 1754 as we find John Matthew' receipt dated May 29, 1754 in the records of Matthews v. Warren for his share of the estate in the form of a bond on Thomas Kirby. It is important to note that while Michael Warren, executor of Robert Matthews' estate, may have been in Berks County in May of 1754 but was living in Augusta County, Virginia prior to and after this date as stated in the Cherrington to Kirby deed above: “Michael Warin late of the same Township, but now of Augusta County in Virginia, yeoman“.
In Matthews v. Warren we find the married name and spouses of Robert Matthew's daughters and the children of his son John Matthews. Amelia Matthews married Robert Dickey about 1755 and by May 27, 1763 they are living in Augusta County, Virginia where Robert Dickey witnesses the receipt of Robert Matthews share of his father's estate who was in Augusta County already. Robert Dickey and Amelia probably moved to Virginia in early 1763 as Mary Matthews, who married James Webb, gives Robert Dickey a letter of attorney dated Oct 1762. Mary Matthews, not yet 21 at time, does so because she is probably already engaged to marry James Webb as they are almost certainly married by May 1763 since their first child is born in Feb. 1764. Mary Matthews may have done so prior to marriage because of Robert Dickey's intended move to Augusta County, Virginia. This is re-inforced by the Berks County Tax list8,9 of June 1763 where we find James Webb no longer listed as a single man. Rebecca Matthews married Benjamin Webb probably in 1764 as on Jul 26, 1764 Benjamin Webb of Exeter Township gives power of attorney to “loving Brother-in-law Robert Mathews of Augusta County in the Province of Virginia Cordwainer” to act on his behalf to obtain Rebecca's share of her father's estate. From the combined research on the Matthews children it appears that the children were named in the order of their birth in Robert Matthews' will. Therefore, Rebecca Matthews would have already been 21 years old in 1764. If Rebecca married earlier than 1764 it would seem likely that she or Benjamin Webb would have claimed her share of the estate prior to Mary Matthews' request of Oct 1762. Furthermore, in the Berks County tax lists Benjamin Webb appears for the first time listed by himself in 1765. Prior to 1765 Benjamin is only found occasionally listed with his father.
Mary Coles:
The maiden name of Mary Coles is known from her marriage record and the Cherrington research and is confirmed by the family record of her son Thomas Cherrington in the Exeter Monthly Meeting of Friends10. In the court and marriage records of Berks County we find a great deal of information on Mary's apparent relationship to Daniel Coles b. 171210 and Solomon Coles b. Jan 10, 1710/1110 who we note were both born shortly before Mary. On Sep 12, 1744 Robert and Mary Matthews sell 60 acres of the original land grant to Robert Patterson (Berks Co., Pennsylvania, Deed Book 11, p. 357 -358). Land which by this date borders that of Daniel Coles who in April 174210 married Dinah Boone the daughter of George Boone and Deborah Howell. After the death of Daniel Coles in 174910 Dinah Boone married Adino Williams about Oct 175110. Dinah was the sister of William Boone who was apparently the guardian of Robert and Mary Matthews' children Townsend and Amelia (See Matthews v. Warren Exhibit C - Robert Matthews Inventory, May 1754). Daniel Coles' brother Solomon died Jul 2, 174610 and his widow Martha Coles married Jun 6, 174810,11 John Hughes the son the Ellis Hughes and Jane Foulke. On Dec 10, 175510 Robert Dickey, husband of Amelia Matthews, is recorded as a witness at the marriage of John Hughes' brother Samuel and Margaret (Gethin) May which seems only explainable by the common Coles ancestry. We find further evidence of the Cole family relationship in the administration of John Matthews and his wife Sarah both of whom apparently died in early 1760. On Apr 12, 1760 William Boone and Samuel Hughes are appraisers of the Inventory of the Estate of Sarah Matthews widow of John Matthews. On Jun 25, 1760 administration of John Matthews estate is granted to “Clement Cherrington and Mary his wife and to Townsend Matthews, said Mary being the mother and said Townsend the bro. of intestate.” John Hughes, Townsend Matthews, and Robert Dickey are Administration bondsmen for the estate of John Matthews.
CLEMENT CHERRINGTON: Dean Cherrington, co-author of THE CHERRINGTON FAMILY HISTORY & GENEALOGY writes4:
“We have a confirmed baptismal record from a church in Cheltenham, England in 1711. Also, the Pennsylvania Archives, Series 5, Vol 1, page 290 shows a Clem'ce Cherrington serving in the Penna. Provincial Militia in 1759 and gives his age as 48 years (thus born in 1711) and his place of birth as Cheltenham, England.
The Mathews boys apparently did quite will for themselves in Rockingham County. Especially Solomon. By 1790 Solomon was listed as one of the major landholders in the County and the owner of a very large iron works and grist mill. We believe Robert also lived in the same area and was a cordwinder (shoemaker or leather craftsman).
By the late 1790's William Cherrington (and possible some of the Mathews siblings) had moved on to the area which is now Greenbrier County, WV. And about 1802 he moved again across the Ohio River into southeast Ohio and to what is now Gallia County. It is Henny Evans' recollection that one of the Mathews boys, probably Townsend, came into Gallia County with William. At any rate, we do know that the children by Mary's first marriage to Robert Mathews and her second marriage to Clement Cherrington seems to have continued a very close relationship for much of their adult lives.
William Cherrington went on to head a family of 2 wives, 16 children and at least 143 grandchildren that we know about. But that story fills another 400+ page book that Henny and I published some years ago."

JOHN2 MATTHEWS (Robert1) was born Abt. 1733 in New York or Philadelphia Co., (now Berks) Pennsylvania, and died Bef. Apr 1760 in Exeter Twp, Berks Co., Pennsylvania the date of his wife Sarah's estate inventory. He married SARAH MILLER Bet. 1750 - 1758 in (speculated marriage, see below), daughter of STEPHEN MILLER and SARAH WARREN. She was born Abt. 1725 in prob. Huntingdon, Suffolk, NY, and died Bef. Apr 1760 in Exeter Twp, Berks, Pennsylvania.
We know that John Matthews was not yet 21 years old in 1750 at the time of his mother's marriage to Clement Cherrington and that he must have been 21 at the time he received his share of Robert Matthews' estate in 1754. This would put his birth date about 1733 which is consistant with the marriage date of his parents. However, it appears likely that John was married prior to 1754. As noted above, both John Matthews and his wife Sarah died in early 1760 leaving two daughters Hannah and Martha who are recorded in Matthews v. Warren. Unfortunately, as yet no exact date of birth has been found for either Hannah or Martha.
Drawing on the research of Diana Lehman16, we know that Stephen Warin/Warren died in Berks County leaving a will dated Feb 20, 1746:
Stephen MILLLER of Amity Twp. signed will, naming wife Joana and George BOONE executors. Mentions children Mary, Stephen, Sarah, Samuel, Henry, Martha and Elizabeth. Son Henry to receive 100 acres in Amity adj. Harmon RICHMAS at age 21 and to pay 30 pounds each to his sisters Martha and Elizabeth when they reach 18 years. Also mentions pewter to be given to dau. Sarah "that hath her mother's mark." Wit: Jacob WARREN, Isaac WISEMAN, Isaac DILBECK. Proved April 8, 1747. (Phila. Wills H.246).
Thus we know that Stephan's daughter Sarah is unmarried in 1746. Sarah is the daughter of Stephan's first wife Sarah Warren. Stephan's son Henry Miller, who married Hannah Winters, died in Agusta Co., Virginia leaving a will dated Mar 9, 179617, proved Apr 1796. Jeremiah Webb, who signs as a witness to Henry Miller's will, is the son of Moses Webb and Hannah Matthews of Berks Co., Pennsylvania as reported by the Rev. J. Wesley Webb in an 1883 letter to Lyman Draper18. The middle name of most of Jeremiah Webb's children is Miller as noted by Rev. J. Wesley Webb. Jeremiah Webb's birth in 1764 would require that his mother's birth was no later that about 1750. In the 1783 accounting of the estate John Matthews is a 1760 receipt for Martha Miller who is probably the daughter of Stephan Miller and sibling of Henry and Sarah. Thus it appears that Sarah Miller was the wife of John Matthews and the parents of Hannah Mattews who married Moses Webb. However definitive proof which proves or disproves this relationship remains elusvie.

AMELIA2 MATTHEWS (Robert1) was born Bet. 1734 - 1740 in prob. Exeter Twp, Philadelphia (now Berks), Pennsylvania, and died Aft. 1810 in <Rockingham Co.>, Virginia. She married ROBERT DICKEY Abt. 1755. He died Bet. Aug 1803 - Jun 19, 1804 in Rockingham Co., Virginia. Amelia Matthews probably married in 1754 or 1755 Robert Dickey as we find the baptism of their first two children recorded at Trinity Lutheran Church in Reading on Oct 18, 1757.
25 Jun 1760 recorded bond of Townsend Mathews, Robert Dickey and John Hughes all of Execer Township to perform inventory of the estate of John Mathews of Exeter deceased.

There is also a marriage listed in Rockingham Co, VA for John Dickey and Christina Manrah in 1780 or 1788 where Robert Dickey posts bond. It is still unclear if this might be another son of Robert Dickey. If Robert Dickey and Jeremiah Dickey are brothers or otherwise related then John might also be the son of Jeremiah. John Dickey also is a bondsman for the marriage of Robert's daughter Rebecca Dickey.
