This genealogy presents a brief and incomplete examination of the descendants of Richard and Mary Webb who immigrated to Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, in 1700/01 from Gloucester, England. I am quite sure there are many more records and sources pertaining to this family than I have included here but hopefully what is presented is sufficient for these purposes. My purpose is threefold:
To show the the information and sources for John and Ann Webb of Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, who many claim is the father of John Webb of Exeter Township, Berks Co., Pennsylvania, who married Mary Boone. This appears highly improbable to this author for reasons that are explained below under John Webb.
To show the lineage of George Webb and Ann Swayne who has often been mistakenly identified as the son of John Webb and Mary Boone. Also to show George Webb and Ann Swyane's son George Webb, b. 1758, who married Hannah Farr and is often confused with George Webb, Jr. who died 1836 in Sullivan Co., TN.
To try and better understand the other Webb families in southeastern Pennsylvania in order to try and understand and identify some Webb families whose parents are not yet known.
RICHARD WEBB “dyed the 19th day 7th Mo 1683”1 Gloucester, England. “His wife was probably married Mary Hayward, nee Hollday of Painswick, Gloucester shire, whom he married 29 August 1655 at Rodborough, Gloucester shire”2. The births of all their children appear in the Gloucester, England Monthly Meeting of Friends records.
In late 1700 or early 1701, several children of Richard and Mary Webb immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their children Richard Webb, John Webb, and their sister-in-law Hannah Lea, widow of their brother Joseph, who had since married John Lea, removed from England to Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.
Citing from Three Hundred Years of Quakerism at Brmingham 1690 – 19903 we find for 27 Aug 1700 O.S.:
Richard and Elizabeth “Richard Webb, John Lea and John Webb all asked Quarterly Meeting at Nailsworth 6th Month 27, 1700 for "certificates to friends in America they having an intent to transport themselves and families thither where upon this meeting gave them certificates." John Lea's wife, Hannah, was the widow of Joseph Webb.
And then from Early Minutes of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting4 we then find that on 28th day, 12th month, 1700 (28 Feb 1701 O.S.): "A certificate from Mailsworth Quarterly meeting on behalf of Richard Webb, his wife & family, was read & approved...". And similary from the same source: 31d, 11m, 1700 (31 Jan 1701 O.S.), "A certificate from Gloucester in Old England on the behalf of John Lee & his family. Likewise one from the Quarterly Meeting of the said County of Gloucester on the behalf of John Webb & his family were read & approved."
John Webb's will, which identifies some of his siblings, was dated 21 August 1711 and proved 15 March 1715 (Philadelphia Co., PA, Will Book D, p. 445,6) in which he names his wife Ann, daughter Susannah the wife of William Monington, brother Richard, sister Mary, sister Sarah the wife of Nathaniel Perrin, sister Rachell Webb, and brother Daniel Webb in Great Britain. Not named is his brother James, who may have already died, and Joseph who died before 1697 when his widow Hannah Webb married John Lea.
Elizabeth, wife of Richard Webb, and a noted Quaker minister has been well documented in a number of sources and no attempt is made her to document their early movements.
Elizabeth, wife of Richard Webb and Hannah wife of John Lee are named in the Chester Co., Pennsylvania Will of the widow Elizabeth Fishbourn dated October 25, 1709, proved November 28, 1709, Will Book C-178. And Elizabeth Webb and Hannah Ley are also named in the Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania will of John Otter dated March 6, 1709, proved December 5, 1709, Will Book C-180 and in which John Webb is named one of the executors

JOHN WEBB, (RICHARD1) was born 23 Aug 1661 O.S. in Glousester, England (23d 6m 16611,10) and died 13 Dec 171112 Philadelphia Co., PA. He married Ann HORROD 18 Aug 1691 O.S. (recorded as 18d 6m 16911) of Gloucester, England.
The birth of only one child of John Webb and Ann Horrod is found in the Gloucester Monthly Meeting records. Daughter Susannah was recorded there on 9d, 8m, 1692 (Gloucester MM records1,13). The research of Kathryn Payne and others shows that John and Ann were active in the Quaker community of Gloucester as were Richard Webb and others. The last record of John Webb in Gloucester, England, found by Kathryn Payne, in A Calendar of the Registers of Apprentices of the City of Gloucester 1595-1700 “11 Sept 1700: turned over by John Webb by consent to Thomas Cooper alias Allen, tailor - Before John Hyett, Alderman”14. The following year, now in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania having arrived by Feb 170115, the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting records a certificate for John Webb and family:
31d, 11m, 1700, "A certificate from Gloucester in Old England on the behalf of John Lee & his family. Likewise one from the Quarterly Meeting of the said County of Gloucester on the behalf of John Webb & his family were read & approved." [The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Vol. VI, p. 72; Early Minutes of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting16,17]
On the 18d, 4m, 1701 (18 Jun 1701 O.S.), John and Ann Webb are witnesses to the marriage of John Warder and Lydia Goodsonn at Philadelphia, PA as recorded in the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting records and they remained active in this Quaker community18,19:
25d, 5m, 1701, "Edward Shippen reports that he hath sold the Silk sent from Thomas Bond to George Gray and John Webb for £7:10" [Source: The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Vol. VI, p. 78]
28d, 6m, 1702 Elizabeth and Ann Webb accompany Joseph Hembry and Eleanor Jackman who announce their intention to marry. {Philadelphia MM minutes, The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Vol. VI, p. 88]
9d, 7m, 1708, Ann Webb, Susanna Webb, & Hannah Webb are witnesses to the marriage of Abraham (Keight) Keite, son of James of Blockly Township Philadelphia Co., PA, and Mary Peters daughter of Thomas of Philadelphia [Philadelphia MM, The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Vol. II, p. 65]
On February 28, 1708, John Webb is a witness to the will of John Jones a merchant of Philadelphia. On October 18, 1708, John Webb of Philadelphia, tailor, is named executor in the will of Mary DEAN of Philadelphia and it was witnessed by John Webb's by Susanna Webb and William Monington. In October 1709, "Admin. on the est. of Roger Townsend of (blank) decd. granted 6 Oct. 1709 to John Webb of Phila., taylor [The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Vol XX, p. 48; Philadelphia Administration Book "B"'; 1702-1720].
Shortly thereafter the marriage of his daughter Susannah is recorded:
“William Monigton of the City of Philadelphia in the Province of Pennsylvania Mrcht and Susanah Webb daughter of John Webb of the said City Taylor” married the 13th day, 8th month, 1709 at the Philadelphia MM20.
On June 12, 1711, Dr. John Goodsonn and John Webb, tailor, are named executors of the will of William DELWYN of Philadelphia [WB C-264].
John Webb died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania leaving a will dated 21 August 1711 and proved 15 March 1715 (Philadelphia Co., PA, Will Book D, p. 4421,22) in which he names his wife Ann, daughter Susannah the wife of William Monington, brother Richard, sister Mary, sister Sarah the wife of Nathaniel Perrin, sister Rachell Webb, and brother Daniel Webb in Great Britain. The names of John Webb's siblings given in his will, along with his birth, the births of his siblings, his marriage, and the birth of his daughter recorded in the Gloucester, England MM records seem to indicated this is the same John Webb, son of Richard.
In The Journal of the Friends Historical Society, Vol. XI ,1914, p. 133-13423, is an article “from one of America’s foremost genealogists, Gilbert Cope, of West Chester, PA”, the author of a great many books (at least two of which are referenced below), who records the same regarding John Webb:
“John Webb died in Philadelphia about the year 1711, leaving a widow, Ann, who subsequently became the wife of Nicholas Pyle, and an only child, Susanna, wife of William Monington. He appears to have been in pretty good circumstances, and by his will gave £20 to each of his brothers and sisters, Richard Webb, Mary Webb, Sarah, wife of Nathaniel Perrin, Rachel Webb and Daniel Webb – the last being in Great Britain. He also gave his wearing apparel to his kinsman, Joseph Webb, son of Hannah Lea, of Chester County.”
It seems reasonable to conclude that if John Webb and Ann Horrod had children, other than Susannah, that they would have been recorded in the Gloucester or Philadelphia Monthly Meeting records. Furthermore, John Webb's will makes extensive provisions for his wife Ann, and their daughter Susannah, but gives no indication of any other children. Quite the opposite in fact, he makes the following provision, in the event his wife died after his daughter and her husband, that leaves little doubt that he had no other children:
“And in case my wife survives my daughter Susannah Monington and her heirs aforesaid and William Monington aforesaid then after my wifes decease I give and bequeath all my real estate to be equally divided between my brothers and sisters now living or those that shall lawfully represent them.”
If John Webb and Susannah had any other children then at least some of them would have been minors at the time of his death. The effect of the provisions of his will would have effectively disowned any other children and thus it seems unlikely there were other children.
John Webb's will is significant because several authors have stated that John Webb of Oley township and later Exeter township in Berks county, born c1794, who married Mary Boone, was a son of John Webb and Ann Horrod. In particular, Dr. Donald E. Webb24 identifies this same John Webb who died in 1711 as the father of John Webb of Exeter. Although Dr. Webb identifies him as the son of Robert Webb of Tetberry rather than the son of Richard born 1661 as noted in the Gloucester Monthly Meeting records. Quoting from Dr. Donald E. Webb:
“John Webb Sr. died in 1711 according to Quaker records. He apparently remained in the bounds of Pennsylvania until his death since he retained his Quaker membership in the monthly meeting there. However, his sons, James Webb, Joseph Webb, Benjamin Webb, Samuel Webb, and John Webb Jr. are said to have settled in Allison Township, what is now called Berks County, Pennsylvania but that part of Berks County was in Philadelphia County in 1720.”
Clearly Dr. Webb is referring to the same John Webb who died in 1711 although he makes no mention of a daughter Susannah nor does he refer to the will of John Webb. Author P. Dows, Sr25 also makes mention of this family:
“With this couple on the same ship came the brother of Richard, John Webb, father of at least six sons and one daughter, one a son James, a Samuel, a John Jr. this last one Married mary Boone and many of his children moved to North Carolina.”
It is not clear if Dr. Donald Webb relied on the work of Dows or if Dows based his information on the work of Dr. Webb as neither indicate on what athority they based their claims. Dr. Webb and Dows were both incorrect as noted by the emminant genealogists and authors Gilbert Cope, as noted above, and by William Brooks Fetters in his book Six Columbiana County, Ohio, Pioneer Families, Volume 2. Fetters, in a footnote referencing the work of Dows, states that Dows apparently confused the children of John Webb of Oley and Exeter with those of John Webb who died in 1711 and refers to the will of John Webb dated 21 August 1711 in Philadelphia. This author concurs with Cope and Fetters that there is no available evidence, direct or circumstantial, to suggest that John and Ann Webb had any children other than daughter Susannah named in his will. There is, however, some circumstantial evidence to suggest that John Webb who married Mary Boone was not the son of John and Ann Webb. (See also John Webb and Mary Boone for additional information.)
One Jane YELDALL, widow of Philadelphia, left a will dated March 6, 1726/7, leaving a bequest to servant Anne WEBB; named William MONNINGTON as executor; and was witnessed by Joseph WEBB. Possibly the Ann Webb, widow of John Webb.
