  1. Samuel Lee s/o Anthony Lee & Mary Whitaker m 1712. Their children Thomas & wife Ellinor Ellis, John didn't marry until 1748; Hannah married in 1759, Mordicai married 1755, Mary married in 1755, Sarah and husband Henry Willets all appear as witnesses.

  2. Margaret Hughes d/o Ellis Hughes & Jane Foulke m. 1713 Gwynedd Mtg. Ellis Hughes s/o John Hughes & Martha Caimot. Their children who appear as witnesses: John (Jno) widow of Hannah Boone; Edward who married in 1749; William and wife Amy Willets; Samuel who will marry a few days later Eliza Willets who also appears. A Rowland Hughes appears and Ellis Hughes does have a son named Rowland who supposedly died in 1738 unmarried but perhaps this needs to be investigated. Or perhaps this a brother of Ellis.

  3. Thomas Ellis m. 1712 Jane Hughes sister of Ellis Hughes [Note 2 for her parents] therefore Jane Ellis is the aunt of Margaret Hughes here married. Their children, cousins of Margaret Hughes, who appear as witnesses are: Morris, Rowland, Mord[icai], and Enos. The Sarah Ellis Junr who appears is probably the wife of Morris Ellis who married Sarah Coleston in 1737. It isn't clear if the Thomas Ellis who appears is Sr or Jr but probably Thomas Jr as his wife Magdalne (Carlen) also appears.

  4. Joseph Boone, s/o George Boone & Mary Maugrigde, and his wife Catherine appear as does his sister Mary [Note 5]; brother James and his wife Mary Foulke; Samuel's widow is probably Elizabeth (Cassel) Boone who appears; and John Boone who apparently never married. Josiah & William Boone who appears must be the sons of George Boone and Deborah Howell neither of who are married by 1747. Daniel Coles is the widow of their sister Dinah Boone. John Hughes [Note 2], brother of the bride, is the widow of their sister Hannah Boone.

  5. John Webb Senr & Mary (Boone) Webb appear as do their children Mary Jr & Sarah neither of whom married until after 1750. Apparently the Webbs are in attendance, like the Boones, because of Mary's nieces & nephews of her brother George.

  6. Rachel, Jemima, John & Eliza Willets & are the children of Thomas Willits & his 2nd wife Rachel Powell. Rachel marries sometime before the end of 1747 to John Webb Jr. Eliza marries only a few days later on the 10th day of the month to Samuel Hughes brother of the bride. Particularly noteworthy and of potential interest to the Coles/Matthews research are the parents of Thomas Willets and those of both his first and second wife. In the Genealogy of Berks County Friends in Pennsylvania by John E. Eshelman, he shows Thomas Willits born Hempstead, Long Island to parents Thomas & Dinah Townsend. Eshelman cites the marriage of Thomas Willits and 1st wife Katharine Hallock at the Westbury, Long Island MM on 24th day 10th mo 1706 and gives Katharine's parents as John Hallock & Abigail Swezey and shows Katharine died 1718 as recorded in Westbury, Long Island MM. Eshelman gives Thomas Willits 2nd wife, whom he married 1719/20 without location, as Rachel Powell daughter of Thomas Powell & Elizabeth Townsend. In Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy Vol. III, p. 470-471 we find the source of Eshelman's data which includes Thomas Williet's parents and grandparents.

  1. Samuel Hughes, s/o Ellis Hughes & Jane Foulke, m. 1st 1747 Elizabeth Willets d/o Thomas Willets & Rachel Powell. Jno Hughes & Edward Hughes are Samuel's brothers. Samuel's sister Margaret m. Samuel Lee and they appear as witnesses.

  2. Robert Dickey we know for certain married Amelia Matthews by 1757 and this marriage indicates they were probably married by 1755 as there seems to be no other explanation for his presence at this marriage. Since Samuel Hughes' brother John married Martha Coles, widow of Solomon Coles, in 1748 it seems probable that he is here because of his wife's Cole heritage.

  3. Dinah (Boone) Williams, d/o George Boone & Deborah Howell, m. 1st Daniel Coles d. 1749 m. 2nd Adino Williams 1751. Martha Coles, widow of Solomon Coles, does not appear as a witness but she married John Huges in 1748 and explains the Coles presence at this marriage.

  4. Joseph, James, Benjamin, & Sarah Webb all siblings and the children of John Webb & Mary Boone.

  5. Thomas Ellis Senr and wife Jane [Hughes] sign as a witnesses as do several of their children: John, Thomas Junr., Morris, Mordecai & wife Mary [Hutton], Rowland and wife Sarah [Stover], Ellen (Eleanor) Lee

  6. Anthony Lee is the father of Thos Lee who married Eleanor Ellis daughter of Thomas Ellis [Note 5]. Anthony's son John and his wife Jane [Hughes] also appear as witnesses. Jos Millard is the husband of Hannah Lee (does not sign), daughter of Anthony Lee.

  7. Benjamin Boone, John Boone & James Boone and his 1st wife Mary (Foulke) Boone who dies the following year are the children of George Boone III d. 1744 & Mary Maugridge. Catherine Boone is probably the wife of their brother Joseph who does not appear on the list. Ann Boone, Mary Boone Junr & Martha Boone are the children of James Boone & Mary (Foulke).

  8. Jeremiah, Hezekiah, & Willm Boone are the children of George Boone IV d. 1753 & Deborah Howell. Jno Hughes [Note 1, 3], brother of the groom, married 1st their sister Hannah Boone who died in 1746 and their two children would be their niece & nephew.

  1. Samuel Webb s/o John Webb & Mary Boone who appear as witnesses. Samuel's borthers John Junr, Benjamin, Joseph, & Jas appear as witnesses.

    Probably Rebecca's father

  2. Hannah Coles probably the daughter of Solomon Coles & Martha as she didn't marry Jonathan Jones until 1765. Hannan's mother Martha Hughes is also a witness [Note 9c].

  3. James Boone, Samuel's uncle and brother of his mother Mary Boone, m. 2nd 1757 Ann (Griffith) Boone who also appears as a witness. Judah Boone, who appears as a witness, is Samuel's cousin and son of James Boone.

  4. Hezekiah, William, & Abigail Boone are Samuel's cousins and the children of his mother's brother George Boone.

  5. Samuel Boone must be a cousin of Samuel Webb and the son of his mother's brother Samuel Boone d. 1745

  6. Thomas Willets & wife Rachel (Powell). Their daughter Rachel m. 1747 John Webb Jr.

  7. Mordicai Ellis, s/o Thomas & Jane Hughes, and his wife Mary (Huttun). Thomas Ellis brother of Mordicai. Sarah Ellis who appears as a witness is most likely the wife of Rowland Ellis as she is the daughter of Jacob Stover & Sarah Boone and sister of Mary Webb the groom's mother.

  8. Samuel Lee, s/o Anthony Lee & Mary Whitaker, and his wife Margaret (Hughes) d/o Ellis Hughes & Jane Foulke [Note 9]

  9. Jane (Foulke) Hughes widow of Ellis Hughes who died only a few months earlier. a) Their daughter Margaret [Note 8]. b) Ellis' son Edward & his wife Elizabeth (Williams). c) daughter-in-law Martha Hughes widow of Ellis' son John Hughes d. 1763 and widow of Solomon Coles [Note 2] and Martha's son George and daughter Jane. d) Ellis' son Saml Huges and probably his daughter Rachel who also signs as a witness.

  10. John Boone is probably either the son of George & Mary Maugridge and an uncle to Samuel Webb or he is the son of James Boone & Mary Foulke. The later possibility is probably a better guess since Mary Boone & Martha Boone both unmarried and Ann Lincoln, wife of Abraham Lincoln, are most likely the children of James Boone & Mary Foulke also.

David? Hughes

  1. George is the son of John Huges d. 1763 and Hannah Boone d. 1746. His father John married 2nd 1748 Martha Coles widow of Solomon Coles [See Note 7]. Mary (Boone) Hope, widow of Thomas Hope d. 1749/50, is George's aunt and sister of his mother. Saml Hughes, brother of George's father, & Margaret Hughes are George's aunt & uncle. Jane, Sarah, & Eleanor are George's sisters [see note 8].

  2. Martha Boone is the daughter of James Boone and Mary Foulke d. 1756. Her father James married 2nd Ann Griffith. It is probably her Father James, his wife Annie, and siblings John (Junr) Mary, Judah, Moses, & Rachel Boone who appear as witnesses. John Junr doesn't always mean the son of John but was often used to distinguish between and older and a younger person of the same name. Hugh Boone & Cathrine are most likely Martha's aunt & uncle. Likewise, Joseph Boone & Catherine Boone are also probably Martha's aunt and uncle. Mary Webb is probably Martha's aunt also [see Note 6]

  3. Mary [Coles] Cherrington, widow of Robert Matthews d. 1748, married Clement Cherrington in 1750. Hannah Coles [see note 7] is almost certainly her neice. Martha Hughes is almost certainly Mary's sister-in-law by her first marriage to Solomon Coles [see note 7].

  4. The step-mother of George Hughes is Martha Coles, widow of Solomon Coles and probable brother of Mary Cherrington [see note 3 & 7] who is a witness. For the same reason this would explain the presence of James Webb & his wife Mary. However, this might also be due to the Willets family association to their brother John Webb who married Rachel Willets the sister of Elizabeth who married Samuel Hughes and also Amy Willets who married Willliam Hughes. William Hughes and Samuel Hughes are brothers of John Hughes the father of George who is married here. The argument against their being there as a function of the Willets association is weak though since we find no other Willets as witnesses.

  5. James Webb married Mary Mathews in 1763 and her mother is Mary Cherrington [see note 3].

  6. Mary (Boone) Webb is probably the mother of James Webb [see note 3] & Sanuel Webb. Her daughter Mary married prior to this marriage and therefore this cannot be her. Mary Webb is also the sister of Martha's (the bride) father James Boone [see Note 2]

  7. Hannah Coles is the daughter of Solomon Coles and Martha who remarried in 1748 to John Hughes. John Hughes died in 1763 before this marriage took place.

  8. Elinor & Sarah Hughes are George's half-sister and the daughter of John Hughes and Martha Coles widow of Solomon Coles [see note 4 & 7].

  9. Morris Ellis & wife Sarah (Coleston) and Mordicai Ellis and wife Mary (Hutton, sons of Thomas & Jane Hughes .Sarah Ellis who appears as a witness is most likely the wife of Rowland Ellis.

  1. Mary (Boone) Webb is most likely Mary Boone wife of John Webb.

  2. Samuel Webb married Rebecca Paine in 1764 (Exeter MM p. 29) and Rebecca is most likely his wife since Benjamin Webb is not in attendance or at least did not sign as a witness.

  3. James Webb and his wife Mary who we know were married by 1763 at the latest (Bible records). One of the two other Mary Webbs listed is the wife of James Webb.

  4. Joseph Webb's wife we know was Mary and they too were married by 1758 [Exeter MM p. 263].

  5. Mary Webb Junr at first glance would appear to be her daughter. However that is unlikely since she is believed to have married either John Sterret about 1750 or Modicai Lincoln abt 1754. Since Mordecai Lincoln appears as a witness also perhaps Mary was incorrectly listed as Mary Webb Junr (improbable). Mary Webb Junr. cannot be George Webb's daughter as she married Nathan Lewis in 1763. Neither can she be the daughter of John Webb Jr. as his children are know from Quaker records. So in short, who is the Mary Webb Junr – perhaps a daughter of one of the sons? She can't be the daughter of James, Joseph, Moses, or Samuel. She can't be the wife of Benjamin because he married Rebecca Matthews who we know was still living in 1803. Assuming that she is not the daughter of John Webb and Mary Boone, that would seem to exclude any possibilites except perhaps the wife of one of George Webb's son. George Webb had the only sons who could have been married by 1767 and it is quite possible that one of his sons John or David might account for the other Mary Webb.

p. 30: Marriage of Jonathan Jones of Reading, son of Joseph and Mary Jones of Cheltenham in Philadelphia County and Hannah Coles, daughter of Solomon Coles deceased of Exeter. 24th day, 4th month, 1769

Witnesses: (complete): Rachel Lee, Rachel Boone, Rachel May, Mord Ellis, Mary Ellis, Thomas May, Thomas Lee, Abel Lee, Margaret Thomas, Jane Starr, Richard Lewis, Richd Penrose, James Boone Jrnr, Moses Boone, Martha Hughes, Joseph Jones, Mary Jones, Elenor Hughes, Sarah Hughes, George Hughes, Judh Boone, Sarah Boone, Saml Hughes, Mary Boone, Jane Ellis, Margaret Lee, Eleanor Lee, Ann Boone, Sarah May, Margaret Hughes, Rachel Hughes, Hannah Lee, Edward Hughes, Elisabeth Hughes, Jane Lee, Eleanor Lee Junr, Rebekah Webb

Note: Rebekah (Matthews) Webb is the wife of Benjamin Webb and daughter of Robert Matthews and Mary Coles. There is little reason to explain Rebecca Matthews presence at this particular marriage except that Hannah Coles is a cousin and the neice of Mary Coles Matthews. Or this might also be Samuel Webb's wife Rebecca Paine.

Pg 44: Marriage of Judah Boone son of James and Mary of Exeter, widow and Hannah Lee daughter of Samuel and Margaret of Oley. 15th day 11th mo 1770

Witnesses (partial): Samuel Webb

Pg 48: Marriage of John Willits and Rachel Hughes 11th day 6th month 1772

Witnesses (partial): Samuel Webb

Pg 149: Marriage of Thomas Cherrington and Rachel Lee 1775

Witnesses (partial): Jas Webb, Saml. Webb, Mary Cherrington

Note: This marriage is probaly a very significant part of the proof that the James Webb who married Mary Matthews is the brother of Samuel Webb and both are the children of John Webb and Mary Boone. The Mary Cherrington listed as a witness is the mother-in-law of James Webb and the mother of the groom Thomas Cherrington. Mary (Coles) Matthews, after the death of Robert Matthews in 1748, married Clement Cherrington in 1750. Other than the fact the James Webb can be traced through almost every year from 1759-1775 in Berks County through tax and court documents. We also find James Webb at every marriage involving some Webb relationship beginning as early as 1755.

Whereas Benjamin Webb hath been brought up under the Demonination of us the People called Quakers; but for want of giving heed to the Dictates of Truth, which would have led him to a dependance on that Ann that can save far beyond the Weapons of War, hath took the liberty to wear a sword in order for defence of himself against the Indians, altho quite contrary to our known principles and practice. And not withstanding he hath at sundry times been spoken to and treated with to condemn his misconduct, but instead of giving any hopes of that, he signified “that Friends thought to keep him under; and that he is not inclined to make any satisfaction; but that Friends may do as they please”. We therefore hold ourselves engaged to testify against him and his said practices and do hereby declare, him the said Benjamin Webb not to be a Member in Unity with us, until by repentance and a circumspect walhing he condemn his outgoing which that he may is our final desire.

Signed in and on behalf of this Meeting by Benjamin Lightfoot

John Harrison and Samuel Lee are apponted to read it to him, give him a copy if he request it, and acquaint him of his right of appeal”

“Ellis Hughes, one of the Friends appointed to treat with John Webb jur. Reports that he hath done accordingly and that he said he hoped it would be a warning to him never to go in such like places again. Samuel Hughes & Samuel Lee are appointed to acquaint him that the? Meeting? Desires (if he is truly sorry for his misconduct) he would bring a paper to next meeting condemming the same in order that it may be read publickly; and if he refuses to comply Friends will be under a necessity of testifying against him.”

John Harrison, one of the Friends appointed to read the testimony against James Webb to him, reports that it is by some means lost, but he having brought one which he thinks is nearly the same with the former, it was read, approved, ordered to be sighned by the clerk, and is as follows, Vizt:

Whereas James Webb was brought up amongst Friends & instructed in the Principles of Truth, but by not taking heed thereto as he ought, hath suffor'd himself to be led astray so far as to shooting match contrary to the rules and good order established amongst Friends, and altho he hath at sondry times been spoken to & treated with to condemn his fault which he still refuses to do, but rather justifies himself therein; Therefore for the clearing of truth and the professon thereof, we do hereby testify against him as a disorderly person, and not a member of our Society, until he shall condemn the same by repentance, whis is our desire.

Signed in and on behalf of this Meeting by Benjamin Lightfoot Clk

Which Caleb and John Harrison are appointed to read to him, give him a copy if desire it, and acquant him of his right of appeal.”

Exeter Monthly Meeting held at Maiden Creek 25th day of the 1st month 1759, pg 314

Exeter representatives report that Mosses Webb son of John Webb is enlisted as a soldier in the Kings' Service.  The meeting upon considoring, that by his Inlistment he hath disowned the principles of Friends, and being informed, that notwithstanding much pains hath been taken by his near Relations & Friends to procure his release, which when they had so far done as that nothing but his consent was wanting to compleat it, he refused to go home to his parents, think that treating with him will not be productive of any good effect, do therefore appoint Thomas Lee and Samuel Hughes to draw an essay of testimony against him & bring to next meeting.
