History
Obediah Wood was probably born in Greenville County, South Carolina
about 1799. In the 1830 census he is listed in Lawrence County, Alabama.
He apparently moved to Kemper County Mississippi in 1835 or '36 probably
through the north east border of Mississippi. In 1837 he is listed in Kemper
County, Mississippi. In 1840 he is listed with wife Prudence and daughter
Mary E. Wood in Kemper Co. On 28 June, 1852, Obediah purchased 80 acres
in Leake Co., MS from the Cambell family. By 1853, Obediah and his family
were settled on the farm in Leake Co. On June 8, 1857, Mary Wood married
Dr. Richard Pearson Poole. They had seven children; three boys and
four girls. The 1860 census shows Obediah and wife Prudence along with
sons John H., James O., and Felix M. on the farm in SE Leake
County near present day Walnut Grove.
During the Civil War, both John and James volunteered for service in the Confederate States Army. James served in the 32nd Mississippi Infantry and rose to the rank of Sargent. I am not sure what outfit John served in, but it is said that he was wounded.
After the Civil War, in 1867, the boys were living with Prudence on the farm in Leake County. Obediah apparently had died. His date of death and place of burial are unknown to me.
I do not know exactly what happened to John H. Wood although I believe he lived in Kemper County for some time. I believe he married and had a family that eventually lived in Petal Mississippi.
James O. Wood went on to become a physician and married Sarah "Sally" Poole (daughter of Dr. R.P. Poole and Anne Turner). They had three daughters (Annie, Stella "Birdie" and Mary C.) and two sons (John H., and William B.). Annie and William died in early childhood. John H. became a doctor and married Emma Tinsley. They lived in Georgetown, Copiah County, Mississippi. I don't know what happened to "Birdie".
Felix married Tolitha "Jenny" McKee (daughter of John McKee and Carolyn Loftin). They had three boys (Claud M, Asa M and Otto M.) and four girls (Abbie L, Eva, Sadie Pearl and Edna Earl). Sadie and Edna were twins. They lived in Kemper County and Lauderdale County. In his later days Felix had a farm on Woods Road (off "Old 8th St. Road") outside Meridian, and Otto lived across the road from him.
