 OLD GUEST HOUSE MUSEUM
JOHN WEMPLE SEARLES ROOM

This room is dedicated to John Searles and his borax operations in Searles Valley.

John Searles (left) and his brother Dennis (right) as photographed shortly after they started mining borax from marshes on the shore of Borax Lake, now Searles Lake.
This is one of the last photographs of John Searles.  John died in October 1897.  He is buried in the St. Helena, California, cemetery in the Napa Valley.
The museum has a large collection of pictures of the early operations on Searles Lake.  Many of these are displayed in the John Searles room.
These are more of the pictures that are on display.
This is John Searles actual coat.  It was donated to the Historical Society in 2003.  The museum also has on display the violin played by John Searles.
